English Business 2 (Personal Pronouns)

Preliminary

My name is Nia Rahmawati, I am an accounting student at Gunadarma University. I  got the assignment to write article from my English lecturer. This time, I will discuss about pronouns. There is five types of pronouns in English, but in my SAP materi we just discuss three types of pronouns. There are personal pronouns, possessive pronouns and reflexive pronouns. But in this article, I will focus on one type of pronouns that is personal pronouns. Which I will explain below.

Problem

The point is we know how to use personal pronouns. Here I will explain about using personal pronouns.
Examples (in each pair, the first sentence shows a subject pronoun, the second an object pronoun):
  • He runs fast. / Did Ram beat him?
  • It doesn't work. / Can the man fix it?
  • We went home. / Anthony drove us.
When we are talking about a single thing, we almost always use it. However, there are a few exceptions. We may sometimes refer to an animal as he/him or she/her, especially if the animal is domesticated or a pet. Ships (and some other vessels or vehicles) as well as some countries are often treated as female and referred to as she/her.

Solution

When a personal pronoun takes the place of a noun as the subject of a sentence, it is both a personal pronoun and a subject pronoun. What is a subject pronoun? In essence, it’s any pronoun that is used to replace a common or proper noun as a sentence’s subject. If you are using a personal pronoun to talk about a person, animal, place, or thing that also happens to be the subject of a sentence, then it is classified as both a personal pronoun and a subject pronoun.
The personal pronouns that are used as object pronouns are different than the personal pronouns that are used as subject pronouns, but they are just as important. There are seven object pronouns that also happen to be personal pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, and them.
